Artistic Statement

ABSTRACT: The text discusses possible aesthetic consequences of a neo- or post-avant-garde artistic situation, as elaborated in recent studies of Peter Bürger and Hanno Rauterberg. The author discusses their views on tendencies towards consumerism and “re-feudalization” within contemporary art as well the “open cynicism” of conceptual art. Going further, the author analyzes tendencies to deny or even suppress aspects of artistic creation in contemporary music, as well as the disappearance of the humanistic notion of art’s ability to exist as a mode of resistance against repressive social and political orders. In contrast, the thesis is made that, music, entailing aesthetic autonomy, is crucial, precisely today, as an essential mode of artistic production with wider social relevance.
